비비추속(Hosta Tratt.)식물은 비짜루과(Asparagaceae)로 분류되며(Angiosperm Phylogeny Group Ⅲ; APG Ⅳ, 2016), 한국, 일본, 중국의 동북부 및 러시아의 동남부지역을 포함한 동아시아 특산 식물로 전세계적으로 약 22-25종이 자생한다(Jones, 1989; Maekawa, 1940). 그러나 비비추속 식물은 1800년대 중반 유럽에서 처음으로 재배되었으며 1960년대 American Hosta Society가 설립되면서 큰 인기를 얻게 되었고(AHS the Hosta Registry, 2018), 현재 등록된 품종은 약 5,800개 이상으로 유럽과 미국에서는 10여 년 이상에 걸쳐 판매 1위로 선호도가 큰 식물이다(AHS Hosta Registry, 2018; Cho et al., 2005b). 원예 품종의 경우 식물체의 크기와 잎의 색깔, 무늬, 형태가 다양하고 내한성이 강하여 정원, 조경 소재로서 활용도가 높다(Grenfell, 1996; Lee et al., 2003). 최근에는 부케, 코사지 등과 같은 꽃꽂이용의 절엽 소재로도 활용되고 있다(Aden, 1992; Grenfell, 1996).
우리나라에서도 외국으로부터 많은 비비추속 품종들이 도입되어 이에 대한 관심도와 활용이 증가하고 있지만 이들에 대한 종에 대한 정보나 국내의 자연 환경에 대한 적응성, 생장 및 개화 특성 등에 관련된 연구는 미비한 실정이다(Lee and Seo, 2003). 주로 품종들의 유전 정보를 통한 분류 연구나(Lee and Maki, 2015), 유연관계를 통한 유전적인 연구(Lee and Chang, 2002), 자생 환경에 관한 연구(Cho et al., 2005a)이며, 원예적인 측면에서는 절엽 수명에 관한 연구(Hong and Lee, 2010), 특성 조사에 관한 연구(Lee and Seo, 2003) 등이 보고된 바 있다.
최근 정원에 대한 관심이 증가 하고 도시의 녹지 공간을 확대하기 위한 노력이 증가하는 추세로(Choi et al., 2017), 비비추속 식물의 활용가치가 증대될 것을 예상되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내 및 국외에서 개발된 비비추속 식물의 85 품종을 대상으로 이들의 생육 특성을 조사하여 정원, 조경 소재로서 활용도를 높일 수 있는 기초자료를 제시하고자 하였다.
재료 및 방법
공시재료
식물재료는 72종의 국외 원예품종과 국내에서 개발된 13종의 품종을 국립수목원 유용식물증식센터에서 포트 및 포장에 식재한 것을 공시재료로 사용하였다. 해외 품종은 국내의 판매업체와 국외 수집을 통하여 재료를 확보하였으며, 2013년부터 2017년까지 4년 동안 포트에서 순화 과정을 통하여 활착, 적응시킨 후 조사에 활용하였다. 국내에서 개발된 품종은 일월비비추(Hosta capitata (Koidz.) Nakai), 좀비비추(H.minor (Baker) Nakai), 비비추(H. longipes (Franch. & Sav.) Matsum.), 주걱비비추(H.clausa Nakai), 흑산도비비추(H.yingeri S.B.Jones) 등을 모본으로 개발되었다. H. ‘Blue Edge’, H. ‘Boeun’, H. ‘Eunha’, H. ‘Green Wave’, H. ‘Hongdo’, H. ‘White Edge’, H. ‘Yellow Dream’, H. ‘Yellow Tiara’ 등은 국내에 신품종으로 등록된 품종이며(Kim and Lee, 2012; Kim et al., 2012; Lee and Hong, 2004a; Lee and Hong, 2004b), H. ‘Manweol’, H. ‘Neulpureum1’, H. ‘Sun & Moon’, H. ‘Wolchul’, H. ‘Yongmun1’은 최근에 국립수목원이 신품종 등록 및 출원을 마친 품종이다.
재배 환경
실험 재료는 포트 및 노지에 정식 하여 활착 시킨 개체들을 활용하였다. 포트 이식시 원예상토(바로커, 서울바이오, 음성, 한국)를 사용하였으며, 물빠짐을 원활하게 돕기 위하여 토양 이식 전 포트의 바닥에 배수층으로 대립(20-30 ㎜) 난석(휴가토, 일본)을 3 ㎝ 정도 깔아준 후 상토에 이식 하였다. 포트는 정사각분 8호(가로 24.5 ㎝, 높이 20.0 ㎝)를 사용하였으며, 포지 환경은 노지조건이었다. 환경조건으로는 시중에서 구입할 수 있는 검정색 60% 차광막을 이용하여 반그늘 조건에서 생육 시켰다. 생장시 완효성비료(오스모코드, Everris, 네덜란드)를 매년 1회, 30알씩 시비하였다. 관수는 미스트 형태로 1일 1회 30분 실시하였다.
생육특성 조사
생육 특성은 2018년 6월부터 9월까지 조사하였다. 형태적 특성 조사는 초장, 초폭, 엽장, 엽폭, 엽병장, 잎무늬 등을 조사하였으며, 초장을 기준으로 소형(20.0 ㎝ 미만), 중형(20.0이상 50.0 ㎝ 미만), 대형(50.0 ㎝ 이상) 그룹으로 나누었다. 무늬색은 American Hosta Society의 Hosta 품종 분류 체계(Schmid, 1999)에 근거하여 가장 대표적인 특징을 표준화 하였다. 꽃의 특성 조사는 꽃대 길이, 꽃대 두께, 꽃의 길이, 꽃의 직경, 꽃대당 꽃 수, 꽃 색, 개화 기간을 조사하였으며, 꽃의 직경을 기분으로 소륜(2.0 ㎝ 미만), 중륜(2.0 ㎝ 이상 5.0 ㎝ 미만), 대륜(5.0 ㎝ 이상) 그룹으로 나누었다. 측정방법은 식물의 한 촉을 기준으로 측정하였으며, 3개체의 평균값과 표준오차를 사용하였다. 개체수가 모자랄 경우 한번만 측정하여 표기하였다.
결과 및 고찰
모본 정보
H. minor와 H. venusta, H. yingeri 등은 우리나라에서 자생하는 Hosta로 H. minor는 난형의 잎 모양이며 약간의 왁스층이 있고, H. venusta는 제주도에서 자생하며 잎모양이 긴 타원형으로 현존하는 가장 작은 종 중 하나로 알려져 있다(Hosta library, 2019). H. yingeri는 흑산도 지역의 특산종으로 잎에 광택이 있으며 다른 종들과 다르게 엽육이 두껍다. 또한 꽃차례가 총상화서로 다른 종들과 구별되는 특징이 있다(Jones, 1989). 이들을 모본으로 하여 육성된 품종은 H. ‘Abby’, H. ‘Blue Edge’를 포함하여 12종이다(Table 1). H. sieboldiana, H. sieboldii, H. tardiflora 등은 일본에서 자생하는 Hosta로 H. ‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’, H. ‘Abiqua Moonbeam’, H. ‘Birchwood Parky’s Gold’를 포함하여 32종이 일본에서 자생하는 Hosta를 기원으로 품종화되었다(Table 1). H. plantaginea는 중국의 Hosta로 다른 종에 비해 두 배 이상의 큰 꽃과 향기를 가지며, 잎 표면에 흰색의 왁스층이 있는 것이 특징이다(Hosta library, 2019). 이를 모본으로 H. ‘Royal Standard’와 H. ‘Venus’가 육종되었다(Table 1). 모본의 기원이 명확하지 않으나 Paul Aden에 의해 육종된 품종의 교배를 통해 얻은 종은 8종이다(Table 1).

본 연구에 사용된 품종의 모본 정보에 대하여 다음과 같이 설명하였다(Table 2). H. ‘Abby’의 경우 H. ‘Gold drop’의 체세포 분열에 의한 선발종을 모본으로 하였으며 모본은 H. venusta의 변종으로 알려져 있다.

생장 특성
85종의 원예 품종특성을 비교한 결과, 초장은 6.2 ㎝부터 75.0 ㎝로 범위가 다양하였으며, H. ‘Yellow Dream’이 가장 작았고 H. ‘Elegance’가 가장 컸다. 초장에 따라 소형종(20.0 ㎝미만), 중형종(20.0 ㎝ 이상 50.0 ㎝ 미만), 대형종(50.0 ㎝ 이상)으로 나누었으며, 소형종은 31.8%, 중형종은 61.2%, 대형종이 7.1%로 분류되었다(Table 2). 엽장은 5.0-43.0 ㎝ 사이였는데 H. ‘Royal Standard’가 43.0 ㎝로 가장 길었고, H. ‘Bizarre’가 5.0 ㎝로 가장 짧았다. H. ‘Bizarre’를 비롯하여 H. ‘Blue Mouse Ears’, H. ‘Manweol’, H. ‘Yellow Dream’ 등 4종이 10 ㎝ 이하의 작은 잎을 가진 계통이었다. 엽폭은 2.1-30.0 ㎝의 사이였으며, H. ‘Bizarre’가 2.0 ㎝로 가장 좁고 H. ‘Elegance’가 30.0 ㎝로 가장 넓었다. 엽장이 작았던 H. ‘Bizarre’와 H. ‘Manweol’을 포함하여 H. ‘Boeun’, H. ‘Golden Scepter’, H. ‘Green Wave’, H. ‘Kabitan’, H. ‘Yongmun1ho’, H. ‘Yellow Dream’이 3 ㎝ 이하의 좁은 입을 가진 계통이었고, H. ‘Abiqua Blue Crinkles’, H. ‘Elegance’, H. ‘Fried Bananas’, H. ‘Inniswwod’, H. ‘Mama Mia’, H. ‘Venus’가 15 ㎝ 이상의 넓은 잎 계통이었다.
엽장과 엽폭을 고려해 볼 때, 잎의 크기가 큰 것은 H. ‘Elegance’와 H. ‘Venus’ 였다. 초폭은 모두 100 ㎝ 이상으로 대형 계통으로 분류할 수 있다. H. ‘Blue Mouse Ears’, H. ‘Manweol’, H. ‘Yellow Dream’ 등 3종류가 엽장과 엽폭이 각각 10.0 ㎝와 5.0 ㎝ 미만으로 소형 계통으로 분류할 수 있다. 초폭의 경우 20 ㎝ 미만이다.
비비추속식물의 잎은 녹색이 기본 계통으로 light green, medium green, dark green, slightly blue-green, medium blue-green, intensely blue-green으로 구분되며, 황색 계열은 greenish-yellow, pale yellow, yellow, golden yellow, greenish-white, creamy white, pure white로 구분 할 수 있다(AHS Hosta Registry, 2018). 잎의 무늬 형태는 standard, marginata, mediovarigata, albomaculata, striata로(Schmid, 1999) (Fig. 1), 85종류 중에서 무늬가 없는 standard 계통종은 22종으로 전체에서 26%를 차지하였으며, 그 중 H. ‘Birchwood Parky’s Gold’, H. ‘Golden Scepter’, H. ‘Royal Standard’, H. ‘Sun Power’, H. ‘Yellow Tiara’ 등 5종류는 greenish-yellow이며, H. ‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’, H. ‘Blue Mouse Ears’, H. ‘Blue Vision’, H. ‘Blue Wedgwood’, H. ‘Elegance’, H. ‘Neulpurem1’, H. ‘Red October’, H. ‘True Blue’ 등 8종은 intensely blue-green을 띄는 진한 녹색 계통이다. 무늬의 종류에 따른 분류에 의하면 잎의 가장자리에 무늬가 있는 marginata (복륜) 계통은 H. ‘Abby’, H. ‘Abiqua Moonbeam’, H. ‘Atlantis’ 등을 포함하여 31종류로 가장 많았으며, H. ‘Avocado’, H. ‘Blazing Saddles’, H. ‘Blue Edge’ 등 28종류는 가운데 무늬가 있는 mediovarigata (중투) 계통이었다. H. ‘Jun Fever’는 무늬가 마디져 보이는 striata (산반) 계통이며, H. ‘Eunha’, H. ‘Wolchul’, H. ‘White Feather’는 무늬가 불규칙하게 있는 albomaculata (서반) 계통이다. 무늬의 크기와 색깔은 종마다 다양하게 나타났다(Table 3).

꽃 특성
꽃의 분류는 직경의 크기를 기준으로 소륜(2.0 ㎝ 미만), 중륜(2.0 ㎝ 이상 5.0 ㎝ 미만), 대륜(5.0 ㎝ 이상)계통으로 분류하였으며, 직경의 길이와 꽃의 길이가 비례하는 것을 알 수 있었다(Table 4). 꽃의 직경은 H. ‘Avocado’가 5.0 ㎝ 이상 되는 대륜 계통이었고 H. ‘Abby’, H. ‘Abiqua Blue Crinkles’, H. ‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’ 등 57종류가 2.0 ㎝이상 5.0 ㎝미만 크기의 중륜 계통이었으며, 나머지 27종류가 2.0 ㎝ 이하의 소륜 계통이다(Table 5). 꽃의 길이는 H. ‘Venus’가 10.0 ㎝으로 가장 길었고 H. ‘Golden Scepter’가 2.0 ㎝, H. ‘Bizarre’, H. ‘Yellow Splash Rim’이 2.5 ㎝로 가장 작았으며, H. ‘Avocado’, H. ‘Venus가 각각 7.1 ㎝와 10.0 ㎝로 가장 길었다. 비비추속 내에서 H.plantaginea 계통의 꽃이 다른 계통의 꽃들 보다 크다고 알려져 있으며(AHS Hosta Registry, 2018), H. ‘Avocado’, H. ‘Venus’도 이와 같은 계통임을 알 수 있다. 꽃의 길이가 3.0 ㎝ 미만은 H. ‘Bizarre’, H. ‘Golden Scepter’, H. ‘Grand Tiara’, H. ‘Yellow Dream’, H. ‘Yellow Splash Rim’ 등 5종이다. 3.0 ㎝이상 4.0 ㎝미만인 종들이 56.5% 차지하였다. 꽃의 특성 조사는 당년에 고온의 피해로 꽃대가 많이 생성되지 않았으며 이에 따라 반복 조사에 어려움이 있었다. 그러나 비비추속 식물의 꽃은 일반적으로 같은 품종에서 개체 간 크기의 차이가 심하지 않기 때문에 기초자료로서 어려움이 없을 것으로 판단된다.

꽃의 색은 6가지(white, near white, pale lavender, medium lavender, pale purple, deep purple)로 분류된다(AHS Hosta Registry, 2018) (Fig. 2). 일반적으로 H. plantaginea 계통의 꽃이 white 계열로 알려져 있으며(AHS Hosta Registry, 2018), 본 연구에서는 H. ‘Avocado’, H. ‘Elegance’, H. ‘Thunderbolt’, H. ‘Venus’를 포함한 22종으로 25.9%를 차지하였다. Lavender 계열은 39종으로 45.9%로 가장 많았고, purple 계열은 24종으로 28.2%였다. 화경당 착화수는 적게는 5개에서 최대 49.5개로 품종 간에 큰 차이를 보였다(Table 6).

개화 특성
개화 시기는 H. ‘Abby’, H. ‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’, H. ‘Abiqua Moonbeam’ 등 36종류가 5월 말부터 꽃이 피기 시작하는 조생종(early flowering cultivar)에 속하며, H. ‘Abiqua Blue Crinkles’, H. ‘Birchwood Parkey’s Gold’, H. ‘Blazing Saddles’등 40종류가 6-7월 사이에 개화(mid-season cultivar)하였다. H. ‘Black Hills’, H. ‘Boeun’, H. ‘Fragrant Bouquet’, H. ‘Fried Bananas’, H. ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’, H. ‘One Man’s Treasure’, H. ‘Venus’, H. ‘Red October’, H. ‘Sugar & Spice’ 등 9종은 8월 이후에 개화하는 만생종(late-season cultivar)으로 조사되었다(Table 7). 그 중 H. ‘Red October’의 경우 이름에서도 알 수 있듯이 10월 초에 개화하는 종으로 가장 늦게까지 꽃을 관상할 수 있다. 비비추속 식물들의 개화 기간은 5월 말경부터 10월 중순에까지 이르는 특징으로 초여름부터 초가을까지의 화단용으로 이용할 수 있을 것으로 보여진다. Smelser (2018)에 따르면 정원에 식물을 식재할 때 개화 기간에 따라 혼합 식재를 할 경우 관상 가치와 시각적인 요소가 더 크게 작용한다고 보고하였다. 비비추속 식물들도 혼합 식재의 재료로써 활용도가 좋을 것으로 사료 된다. 일반적으로 비비추속 식물의 꽃대는 녹색을 바탕으로 이루어져 있으나 H. ‘Cherry Berry’와 H. ‘Revolution’은 각각 빨간색과 노란색의 꽃대를 갖는다(Fig. 3). 비비추속 식물의 꽃은 대부분 향기가 없으나 H. plantaginea 계통은 유일하게 강한 향을 가지며(Grenfell, 1996; AHS Hosta Registry, 2018), H. ‘Blue Mouse Ears’, H. ‘Captain Kirk’, H. ‘Fragrant Bouquet’, H. ‘Fried Bananas’, H. ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’, H. ‘Independence’, H. ‘Pilgrim’, H. ‘Venus’, H. ‘Royal Standard’, H. Sugar & Spice’, H. ‘True Blue’, H. ‘Twilight’ 등 12종류는 개화 하였을 때 향기가 있었다. 잎의 무늬나 색깔뿐만 아니라 꽃의 향기나 꽃대의 색깔 등의 특징들은 종들마다 다르게 나타나기 때문에 비비추속 식물들을 활용하는데 있어 가치를 더 높일 수 있다고 판단된다.

모본 정보 조사
본 연구에 사용한 85품종 중 72종의 국외 원예 품종의 육성 경로 및 모본에 대한 자료는 Hosta library (Hosta library, 2019)를 통해 자료를 수집하였다.
적 요
국내외 개발된 Hsota 품종의 잎의 생육과 개화 특성을 조사한 결과, 식물의 크기는 H. ‘Abiqua Blue Crinkles’, H. ‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’, H. ‘Dancing in the Rain’, H. ‘Elegance’, H. ‘Inniswood’, H. ‘Venus’등 6종류가 가장 컸으며(대형 계통, 50 ㎝ 이상), H. ‘Abby’, H. ‘Birchwood Parky’s Gold’, H. ‘Blue Cadet’, and H. ‘Blue Edge등을 포함한 27종은 소형 계통이다(6 ㎝ 이상 20 ㎝ 미만). 79%가 무늬를 가지며 무늬 형태는 marginata (복륜), mediovarigata (중투), albomaculata (산반), striata (서반)이며, marginata 계통은 H. ‘Abby’, H. ‘Abiqua Moonbeam’, H. ‘Atlantis’등을 포함하여 31종류로 전체 비율 중 36%로 가장 많았다. 개화기는 H. ‘Abby’, H. ‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’, H. ‘Abiqua Moonbeam’등 36종류가 5월 말부터 개화였고, H. ‘Black Hills’, H. ‘Boeun’, H. ‘Fragrant Bouquet’등 9종은 8월 이후에 개화하였다. 꽃은 H. ‘Avocado’가 5.0 ㎝ 이상으로 대륜 계통이었으며, H. ‘Avocado’, H. ‘Fragrant Bouquet’, H. ‘Fried Bananas’ 등 H. plantaginea 계통이 대부분 크기가 컸다. 꽃의 색은 꽃의 색은 6가지로 분류되며, white 계열은 25.9%, lavender 계열은 45.9%, purple 계열은 28.2%가 개화하였다.
